May Bumps and Race results

The women’s side went from a single IV at the start of the year to three full VIIIs in May Bumps, thanks to an astonishing six boats’ worth of novices recruited by our excellent LBCs.  In May Bumps, W1 were bumped by Peterhouse W1 and Fitzwilliam W1, both of which bladed; W2 rose one place with an impressive bump on Robinson W1; and W3 got caught in an overbump from an extremely strong Lucy Cavendish/Hughes Hall combined W2.

Our men’s side remains strong, with M1 dropping one place in Mays to fourth on the river and currently standing at fifth place in Lents.  M2 rose one place with an impressive bump on Darwin M1 just after the motorway bridge.  M3 collected their blades for the fourth year in a row, including bumps on the M2 crews of Homerton, St Edmund’s and Sidney Sussex.  They now stand at 11th in the fourth division.

M2 have raced successfully throughout the year, winning the Novice VIIIs division at Bedford Regatta, and our W1 cox Tom Whittaker was awarded the Champion Cox Prize at the Champs Head Race in May.

Huge thanks are due to the alumni coaches who have worked with us throughout the year: Samantha and William Deacon, Clare Hall and Sarah Airey for W1, Matt Castle for W2, Alan Foster and Eddy Flower for M2 and Stephen Halliday for W4.  As always, we are indebted to our wonderful boatman, Kevin Bowles, for his ongoing work and patience.

Growth & development

The Pembroke community was deeply shocked and saddened by the death of Jo Cox in June last year.  Jo rowed Bumps for Pembroke and graduated in 1995.  PCBC is now a strong supporter of the Jo Cox Foundation, founded to support Jo’s friends, family and colleagues in their efforts to continue her work and act on her values.  In January this year we organised an indoor rowing race against Pembroke College, Oxford, in which each college’s members combined (including our Dean!) rowed the 120km between the two colleges and in so doing raised £500 for the Foundation.  Our Mays crews wore ribbons this year in her memory.

PCBC has grown hugely as a club this year.  As well as entering over seventy athletes into May Bumps, we’re all incredibly excited to be nearing the purchase of the two new boats, for our men’s and women’s first crews. These brand-new Stämpfli VIIIs will underpin all our training for the years to come.  The first was christened Valence Marie and raced by W1 in Mays;  the second was funded by a campaign in memory of James van Oosterom (1976), who sadly passed away last August after an eighteen-month battle with leukaemia.  Jamie rowed in our men’s first VIII and regularly returned to coach PCBC crews over the years after his graduation.  These two new boats will enable us to take our rowing to the next level this year and in the years to come.

The year ahead

As in the past, there was significant University representation by PCBC athletes this year. Fresher Emma Andrews stroked the CUW Blondie crew to victory against Oxford’s Osiris in April; Seoirse Murray (Men’s Captain), Jonty Page and Sam Ringer  (all M1 Mays) raced with the Goldie Development Squad at Henley for the Temple Challenge Cup; Charlie Cummins and Dominic Hall (cox) raced the Cambridge Lightweights to victory against Oxford in March; and Jonathan Vibhishanan and John Hudson completed the CULRC Development Camp.  A highly successful AGM saw our full committee elected, with former Men’s Captain Stijn de Graaf returning from MIT to take the overall captaincy.  Mairenn Collins and John Hughes become the Women’s and Men’s Captains respectively.

With your continued engagement and support, PCBC’s prospects have rarely been stronger.  Follow our website and our Instagram for the latest news.
